Literal answer-more durable and simple(upright pistons, usually 3 valves), and generally made with slightly(generally, a lot) less attention to detail than a company's more pro-level horns. That is, unless you buy from someone like Miraphone(S-series 186, 191, etc.)
Figurative answer-anything. I used a 20J and a 1917 Buescher before I got my 187, which is also a student horn, because it's being used by a student, but it is a serious pro-level horn. Conn more applied to the "less attention to detail, but give it a great sound" approach, as the 14k, 10J, and other models proved.
