Someone has finally commented on the difference between Chester on his Alex, and Chester on the Hirsbrunner and later equipment. He's been such an icon all these years that it's been considered heresy to express less than totally uncritical adulation at all times.

To those of us who heard him early on, there was something VERY special about his sound, and that special quality was not only the Alex, but the combination of Chester AND the Alex. It was like Jacobs and his York, just as special and just as unique, yet differnt enough to make him quite his own individual. Ozawa brought that to an end when he required Chester to change to the Hirsbrunner, "fixing" something that wasn't "broken." Chester would remain a great player to his final day on the job, but the breathtaking Chester/Alex sound was history. We was robbed.
