I play on a 105 rim with a J cup, and I switched during the last ITEC from a schilke 51D. It made my sound alot thicker, I don't think that it neccesarily darkened the tone because I have a strong concept of what I want to sound like. I also play a willson 2900, which puts us in a similiar situation. I think that a good concept of sound would really help. I really enjoy playing the Doug Elliots cause their rims are very comfortable, and I was able to pick which combination worked for me best. Maybe you should stick to DE's and mess around with different sizes.
