The tour guide is right. There used to be a little hole-in-the-wall restaurant north of the interstate that would only allow you to get there via taxi and would have an armed escort to take you in and out of the restaurant. Mighty fine food though.

As far as jazz... Preservation Hall is still kicking on St. Peter between Bourbon and Royal. If you've never been there it's worth the $5 cover to check out the cruddy atmosphere but great music (including an awesome sousaphone player some of the time). There are a couple other jazz clubs on Esplande and that direction just outside of the Quarter.

If you're looking to escape some of the tourism go towards canal street, find S. Peters and check out the Garden district.. though there are some touristy places (i.e. Emeril's (Great food though) there are also some other really neat places.

To check out some of beautiful old New Orleans, find the trolley through the Garden district and ride it on down.. go by Loyola and Tulane as well as some really old houses and what have you.
