Whoever the guy is that owns/owned the Guy Lombardo book used to book concerts in medium-sized towns. He would fly into big cities with a trunk full of blazers (coats), music folders, and front-row stands for the saxes. He would preengage someone in the city to hire musicians and rent a tour bus. The band would meet in a parking lot, ride a hundred or so miles to a medium-sized town, sightread a concert (absolutely no rehearsal), get back on the tour bus, and ride back home.
This made it appear as if the Guy Lombardo Band was "real". I was involved in this once when the entire band was invited over to some rich guy's home after the concert for a fancy reception. We really had to make up some stories about the "life on the road", where we were all originally from, etc.
