Covers tend to - over time and in general - cause more damage than protection.
The best and simplest strategy is to wash your hands and forearms prior to playing, wipe off the instrument when you're done, and spray a little furniture polish on those areas regularly.
The lacquer on Miraphone tubas is quite tough.
