Not to open a major can of worms, but a discussion such as this should at least touch on what the heck IS vibrato.
The majority of players I've heard (and singers, too, unfortunately) are actually practicing tremolo when they are supposedly using vibrato. The difference? Vibrato is defined as "a rapid fluctuation in pitch" whereas tremolo is defined as "a rapid fluctuation in intensity".
When considering the ways that have been suggested to produce "vibrato", one might conclude why Mr.Bell was so insistent on using the jaw method. Rapidly changing the flow of air is more likely to result in a rapid change in intensity (aka volume). I've recorded a lot of singers, and occasionally one will come along that uses incredible vibrato - the effect is there, but the level meters on the mixing console are rock steady- no change in the volume.
None of this, of course makes mastering vibrato any easier - but it does present a challenge.
