The blending effect works well only as long as both players manage to play in tune with each other. When the players are out of tune with each other, it makes no difference what kind of instrument is played.

I realize the above is a "duh" kind of statement. When different instruments are played, different notes will have pitch variations. Since very few ensembles that have multiple tubas or euphoniums use the same brand or model of instrument, the skill of the players becomes the most important factor. Learning how to play in tune with oneself becomes, besides tone quality, the most important feature of playing.
