I record using a mac G4 powerbook and I get wonderful results. You have to isolate the computer a bit and get it away from the mics but it does not have to be in a different room. Pre amps are a good thing. The pre amp controls the signal level going to whatever media you are recording onto. If you don't have a pre amp the signal may be too hot and clip which in the digital domain is really nasty and it isn't pretty in alolog either. If the signal is not hot enough then you will get noise in the recording. Pre amps are very necessary for good quality recording.
With the better software you can edit multiple takes into one finished take and produce a very pollished final product. Even if you have only one take you can perform signal processing such as comprression reverb, delay, and EQ which may give you a much improved final product.
