Once he gets into an instructional situation(lessons or band class) he will probably be playing fairly sharp. The instructor will help him position the slides properly. He'll need to know/learn the difference between the main tuning slide(for tuning the entire instrument) and the individual valve slides(for tuning specific valves). You've already done a very nice thing for your son; on behalf of all the kids who grew up playing beat up school tubas- thank you. Now get ready to haul him AND his horn around for the next several years.
