I prefer to think of it as playing time and practice time. Actually sitting down to practice gives you both, whereas sitting in front of the tube watching Sportscenter while playing long tones only gives you face time. If you compare this practice to athletic training this would be the equivalent of treadmill time- the brain isn't nearly as engaged as during sport-specific drills, but nonetheless this is very important to our overall development as players.
Face time that is used for practice.. great. If your face outlasts your concentration...that's okay too, just "noodle" if your brain is spent. If your concentration outlasts your face? Looks like the endurance needs work.
