The Jupiter is a fine instrument. Your son will get many years of enjoyment out of playing it; just don't drop it! If he takes good care of it you can probably recover most of your investment if he ever decides on something else.
What to do with the slides: just don't let them get stuck. Move them at least once a week and lubricate them when necessary. Eventually, perhaps with the help of a good instructor, he may decide to keep one or two of them pulled out a bit, but don't worry about that now.
