It was a great shame that John Fletcher never wrote a book/course of studies. However he was a great believer in using 'real music' as the basis of studies. I first went to him as a 15-year old. He was only 24 but had already mastered all the Bach Cello Suites at written pitch. He was also perfectly capable of playing them up an octave! His 1st Suite (in G major) was nothing short of revelatory! For tongue-improvement he simply took any tune....a hymn or carol perhaps...and semiquavered it throughout, keeping strictly to the tune's melodic profile.
