Let me correct myself, before someone else does. It is a fool's errand to try to define what is good. This will change depending upon who you ask, and when asked. Rather, it is enough to be able to completely characterize the sound, and then to let the instrument designer decide which sound production characteristics he/she will design to. The difficulty that we have now is that we have not adequately defined the characteristics of the sound, and found the relationship between construction characteristics (which aren't well defined either) and the sound produced.
