I played a [brand X] tuba in [the hall] and received comments from some unsolicited comments from the principal and third horn players pretty much stating that I shouldn't buy that tuba. They said the sound of that instrument didn't carry properly. I was puzzled by their comments, as from my perspective the tuba [brand X] seemed to perform quite well.

I thought those comments were puzzling until I stumbled across a far superior instrument that was almost identical in size and style, though a completely different brand.

The same horn players came over to me (after trying out that superior tuba on another concert years later) and just said "wow".

I bought the tuba, and am profoundly pleased.]

The brands and models aren't important. I'm not qualified to recommend tubas for other professionals to buy.

The point, though, is that sometimes we should indeed digest the observations of other known "good listeners" and seriously weigh them in with our own.
