It's hard to tell from your description what it might be. But cleaning by a pro would not do any harm in any case. What nickel plating are you talking about? I've never seen a rotor that was plated.

Buildup on rotary valves will sometimes cause a dragging or friction sound, and the buildup is often dried calcium deposits from saliva. It has to be removed to solve the problem.
