Something that should be noted is that instruments in general produce very little sound in the extreme low registers--most of the entergy is in the harmonic content and the ear "infers" the low frequency. A contrabasson, for example, has almost none of its energy in the fundamental and the "pedal" notes on a tuba are almost all harmonic. The same goes for those low notes on a piano.

I have a question for those of you who arrange for groups with two or more tubas on a part. When you want to create the sound of a very low tuba note, do you score both tubas to play the "pedal" or is it more effective to have them play up an octave, but a fifth apart?
