I played a 641 for several years in Jr./H.S. before changing schools and horns. I switched to a Mir. 186 BBb. What a difference! Even though the 641 has a larger bore, the 186 blew MUCH more freely. The low register wasn't nearly as stuffy on the 186, and projected much better. I also agree that the valves supplied an auxilliary percussion section. Keep in mind that these thoughts are coming many years after the fact, and the 641 I played on had a 3 digit serial #, so they may have improved since then.
