Old Conns vs new large BBb Tubas

I'm curious about this. I haven't been actively playing for a very long time, but played a huge (and new) Conn 25J in college in the middle 60's, then played it again in some recital and orchestra work with the local university in the early 80's, but alas! They eventually needed it back.

I'm thinking about picking up a horn and getting back into playing, but I'm just not yup to speed on what is out there and is worth having for a reasonable sum of money.

I saw a good looking 25UJ on ebay last week (should have bid on it!) and have thoht about one of those, or perhaps some more modern large-bore BBb. Can anyone compare for me the TE St. Pete with a 25J (can it be possible that anyone here has played them both?) I know that the St. Pete has its problems with lack of durability when compared to a dreadnought like the 25J, but how to dhey stack up in terms of playing and sound?

What others are out there (well below the Mirafone price range) that are comparable in sound?

Please excuse my ignorance, but I'm not up to date on this at all.

Thanks
Graham Smith
