I guess P.T. Barnum was right, eh? Well, I for one have not had this happen to me. I currently own 5 tubas and only 1, my Willson Eb, is silver. The only reason I have a silver instrument is because the deal was SWEET! If I had ordered one from the factory it would have been lacquered or better yet, raw brass.

Regarding the way the plating affects the sound, I would say that I'm pretty skeptical when it comes to such claims. To be sure, I don't hear any difference in identical tubas in a side by side comparison. But with trumpets, I do hear a distinct difference. I even remember doing this experiment where we blindfolded a trumpeter and then handed him instruments so he couldn't tell which was which. Every time the silver plated trumpet was brighter sounding. Was it just our perception or is there some logical explanation why I would hear a difference in trumpets and not tubas? John Swenson, are you out there???

Happy Holidays to all!
