Yes, it's true. Wagner Tubas (Tuben) were designed to Wagner's specifications and are played by French Hornists, hence the left handed valves. The players are also able to use their FH mouthpieces in them. They were developed to produce a new brass colour in the opera orchestra and to bridge the gap in range between the horns and contrabass tuba. First used in Wagner's Ring Cycle, they are also in works by Richard Strauss, Stravinsky, Schoenberg, and most notably in the last three symphonies of Anton Bruckner, not to mention a number of Hollywood film scores.
