I was able to choose from among 8 HB21's back in 1993 and, yes, they were all different. Intonation was consistent for most notes but the deciding factor was which one had the best in tune Eb below the staff (all 8 were flat, some disturbingly so). Lead pipes were mounted to the bell in slightly different positions. They were all very good instruments, built like tanks. I chose the one that worked for me. Try to play as many of them as you can, especially if it is one that several folks agree is particularly good. More importantly, be sure the 'brunner is the sound for you; I use mine for band playing but try to avoid using it in quintet and chamber music if I can (doesn't seem to blend as well as the ole piggy !) Hope this helps.
