I've had a great time shipping my horn in it's Viking flight case for the past 3 years. I haven't had to ship anything in the past year since I got a new/smaller case for my 2155, but I shipped my mirafone probably about 12 times from Dallas to Orlando.
I had trouble the last time I shipped it UPS however, they said after all those times they've mailed it for me that they were always wrong in taking it and that it exceeded some size limit. Anyways, I had a manager there tell me to call their package pickup service next time, allowing me to tell them the size and weight, that way the delivery guy wouldn't check it for limits - giving me less crap to deal with.
They always charged me $60 give or take a few.
