I hear people emphasizing "air, air, air" which is very good, but I think that BEYOND air, there is embouchure control.

Woodwind players are helpless without a good reed. Our embouchure IS our reed. The more areas along the touching surfaces of our lips that support a pure uninterrupted sine wave pattern, the more "solid", the more "centered", the more "core", the more "however you want to say it".

Using air properly gets one in the door, but embouchure resonance is the ticket to artistry. Perhaps when Mr. Arnold Jacobs referred often to "singing" and "song", embouchure resonance (combined with the proper use of air and with soulful musical expression) is the actual physical phenomenon that he was looking for his students to achieve.
