I would add to the Rufus Reid suggestion that you check out the string bass book by Ray Brown on creating bass lines. I can't remember the name right off hand, but a look at a few bass websites should send you on the right track. This book is a little easier to start with and a little more sequential than Rufus Reid's books, IMHO.
One thing to keep in mind when creating bass lines is to work really hard on learning how to play the modes and their arpeggios. If you can get these down pat in all the keys, you will be the better for it. Best of luck!!
