The first performances in Austria and Germany, and now days most German trained tuba players play the whole symphony on F tuba. Mahler's conception was F tuba, and as a conductor he normally had only F tubas in Vienna. That has always been their tradition--the F tuba has been the main tuba. Now one finds the big tubas being used more and more, a definite American influence.
