Yeah, I remember hearing about that stepped leadpipe as well. If I remember correctly, the thinking was that each "step" was supposed to be the exact right position for a particular note to slot well and be very accurately in tune. I remember thinking that this was ludicrous and wondering how they could fit all those "steps" in a leadpipe, one for each note. I mean, the leadpipe is only so long and how many notes can you play on a trumpet? I don't remember whose idea this leadpipe was but I do remember that it didn't last very long. I also remember the concept spawning a whole new train of thought among brass players about the possibility of denting their horns in just the right place(s) to improve the horn's playing characteristics. Do you suppose this led to the invention and widespread popularity of the gig bag??? ;-)
