An easy thing to try is to clean your rim thoroughly, then apply a coat of fingernail polish to it. The polish (lacquer, actually) will probably flake off in a few days, but if you notice improvements in your red ring, you may want to consider gold plating, polycarbonate (generic name for G.E. Lexan), or other alternatives.

You may be able to determine silver sensitivity by, first, washing the inside of your forearm to remove skin oils, and then holdingsomething silver (spoon, piece of jewelry, etc.) loosely in place with an Ace bandage for an hour or two. A couple of other metals (a nickel and a penny, for example) may help you determine if the redness is due to the silver, per se, or just from the pressure.

You may also find that you are more sensitive to silver at different times than at others. For example, if you are suffering from bad hay fever or molds some part of the year, your skin may react more to environmental assaults.
