The Eb 5 valve rotary was still on the 1997 price list. Not wishing to sound boastful but i've currently got one of these which I picked up very cheaply 20 years ago and one of the new 3 + 1 compensating jobbies which I bought new last year.I find that both play well on large mouthpieces. I use a PT24+.The tone of the rotary tuba is gorgeous but the 688 compensator is much more agile and the lower register speaks far more easily to my mind. The horn is not as big as the equivalent sovereign and is perhaps a better small ensemble tuba.I use it for everything, however.Tuning throughout the range is superb on the new tuba. The rotary needed you to work at it (again a personal view). My rotary blew a tad sharp and I had the main tuning slide lengthened a little to solve this.Hope all this helps you.E mail me if you want more info.iandavies(AT)bushinternet.com
