I had a chance to hear the CSO play Bruckner 9 (that's the one that uses all the Wagner tubas, right?) in 99. While it had it's powerful moments, I don't recall it ever getting ridiculous. However, this is Barenboim, not Solti, who, as has been said, had a tendency to evoke that sort of painfully loud brass. Hopefully I'll be able to go to the 7th in March, with this in mind, and reflect on it.
