Fei,
First of all thank your band director, this is a great piece and one of the most fun ones I have played in band. I played the same piece a few years ago and had a blast. My interpretation of those dynamic markings was that the FFF in the oopah section ment pretty darn loud, but no so much as to over power the melody at that point, and at the section marked FFFF with the Trombonebone and Tuba theme, play it as lound as you can (while getting a good sound and balencing the trombone of course) this is your moment to shine to do it! Now I'm off to go dig up my copy of 1812, I gotta listen to it again...
Alex

BTW That trombone and Tuba theme with the half notes is actually the song Hail to the Czar (or so I've been told) and if you listen to other pieces by Tschovsky (sp?) especially March Slav, you hear it all the time...
