While I agree with most of the comments from others, there is something no one else has mentioned.
There is this person stadning in front of the band that is in a unique position to hear all of the instruments; and it is actually this person's job to make sure that all of those instruments play well together. I believe the term for this person is "director". I would take my final cue from the director.
BTW, why is it that bands have directors and orchestras have conductors?
