Don't kid yourself, Hindemith is definitely a VERY difficult piece. Some aspects are harder than Vaughan Williams and Gregson. You should feel good for being at that level right now. One thing though: Meistersinger and the Ride, while quite challenging to even a professional, are certainly not the hardest things on the rep. Most colleges wouldn't even dream of asking for Mahler 2, 5, or 6, Bruckner 7 (or 4 or 5 or 8), Tchaikovsky 4-6, Stravinsky "Rite", or anything by Shotakovich, Berlioz, Bruckner, Prokofiev, Britten, or Revueltas. My theory is that colleges ask for the best known pieces because these are the ones you'll be playing most often for the rest of your life.
