I always thought that range at the expense of tone was a waste of air.  What use is a high note if no one wants to listen to it?  A lot of trumpeters (particularly jazzers) are quite happy to really scream the top range, going for pitch and volume rather than a rounded tone - although by that pitch it is actually quite hard to tell the difference.  I don't think tuba players can get away with that.  I'm trying to imagine the sound of "screech tuba", and I'm feeling quite ill thinking about it.
