I haven't found this to be the case, but you certainly have to know what you are buying and know what it would cost elsewhere. You can get real bargains on eBay, but it is important to know when to stop bidding.
I find eBay best for finding that one of a kind, no longer manufactured/antique thing that you might not find in a normal store, or even your local antique store. Most of these types of items don't really have good comparable prices, so you really have to know the market in general. This is not the best scenario for someone buying their first horn.
