yes, keeping the tone the same throughout our range is something we work on sometimes. however, make sure this doesn't lead to boring or stale playing. an interesting solo often involves more than one color in tone. experiment with what sounds best for the piece you are playing(as well as dynamic contrast and melodic line). i believe it to be sometimes appropriate to change the color of your tone to show intensity in a crescendo or when the piece makes an unexpected dynamic change. don't be the norm. record yourself and produce the sound you want to hear.
