I highly recommend asking some French Horn players (although you may not come across many in your line of music).
Many, many of the French Horn players I know have owned both attached and detachable bell instruments, and quite a few have had "conversions" done... (usually for the sake of the compact transporting of the instrument in its case or gig-bag, once you have a tetachable bell... as far as I can tell!).
It must not have any adverse effects (if the modification is done competently) If the sound of the instrument was compromised, I couldn't imagine orchestral French Hornists going in for this type of conversion done (yet I know some do).
