The question is, on which works did those famous British tuba players bring out the big gun. It seems from my perspective that the EEb was the default horn, like a 4/4 CC for most players, with the big horns used on special occasions when needed.

The B&H EEb's that I've heard and tooted on seem like they would be fine in a small orchestra, or in an orchestra consisting mostly of small-bore brass, as British orchestras once did. I'm not sure how it would balance a section of trombone blasters with their .6-bore trombones and 1G mouthpieces.
