No, you did not pay too much, but you probably cost yourself about $100 by not sniping.
If you are going to be at your keyboard anyway, then you might as well place you maximum bid in the last 10 seconds of the auction. That way you avoid the war you got yourself into. Most peple on ebay bid the smallest possible bid over the current bid, and the way ebay is configured with proxy bidding, that is very unwise.
