Well here's another priceless foible, one that most Jacobs students will relate to. This video will probably be impossible to find anywhere other than the Chicago Symphony Store, if THEY even have it anymore. It's called Solti/Chicago Spectacular, issued in 1984, and I bought it in '85 from Tower. It's a full-length concert that contains the Overture to Borodin's Prince Igor, Tchaikovsky 1st Piano Concerto w/Cecile Licad, and Also Sprach Zarathustra. Dave Fedderly plays 2nd tuba, on his Yorkbrunner. The camera inadvertantly captures a magic personal moment. Just after the interlude with the 2nd tuba solos, the camera settles on the cellos playing the powerful ascending figures that begin the following section. Just behind them you can see Mr. Jacobs give Dave a punch on the leg. Those of us who spent any time with Mr. Jacobs in lessons will recall that when things really went well, he'd give you a punch on the leg, usually accompanied by a verbal exclamation like, "'atta boy!" or "now yer cookin'!" Well, Dave did great. He got one on the stage, recorded for posterity.
