My contribution to this discussion is STRONGLY
recommended (although it's kind of "pricey").
The 1990 production of THE RING CYCLE by The
Metropolitan Opera with James Levine conducting
the Met Orchestra on Deutsche Grammophon is
just incredible !! The stage settings (traditional)
and the soloists are all excellent, but the brass
playing from the pit make this one of the best
Wagner recordings (CD, LP, video, etc.) ever.
And with almost 16 hours worth of music, it could
be argued that this actually a bargain !

1990 Met/Levine version on DGG)
