I will second tubagoo's opinion. I use both depending on the literature. I like to use the bone on renaissance music, some Baroque stuff and some modern literature that may be specifically written for the bass bone. I will admit for general use I usually use my Eb tuba. I think the tuba does give a stronger bass sound to the ensemble. My favorite use of the trombone is one renaissance things like the Elizabetha style dances or early baroque things like Gabrielli which were more commonly played on sackbuts. I know everyone loves the big brass sound of Gabrieli stuff like you hear on the famous Phila/Chicago/cleveland record or CD (myself included), but really Gabrielli's music sounded nothing like that when played on cornettos, sackbuts and viols.
