As a tubist I take great offense when a quintet uses a bass trombone
instead of the tuba. I am biased as one would expect. With that said,
I would take greater offense to a trombonist/bass trombonist trying to
play the tuba in a brass quintet "if" that individual were indeed a
trombonist. I can get around on trombone/bass trombone but not well
enough for a performance and certainly not anywhere close to my
abilities on the tuba. If you are going to pick up the tuba for the
quintet only, make sure you a damn good at it or else the music, the quintet
and the audience will suffer. As implied, I would much rather hear the
tuba in a brass quintet but I would never be dissapointed in a performance
where the likes of John Rojak, Randall Hawes (Detroit Symphony) or any
other professional bass trombonist is sitting in the 5th seat. If you play
bass trombone then play bass trombone. There is nothing wrong with that.
I am curious though. Why aren't you playing trombone?

Good luck

Mike
