I recently saw a movie on a PBS TV station. It was the 1934 version of "The Scarlet Pimpernel" (sp?) with Leslie Howard and Merle Oberon.

Early on was a sequence featuring a circa 1789 military parade band composed of drums, large natural horns, bassett horns, small bassoons, and a serpent. The recorded sound wasn't too bad, and the music was by Arthur Benjamin, later to become Sir Arthur Benjamin. (I felt really sorry for the guy marching with the heavy-looking serpent.)
