My experience with HP printers (and I work for an HP autorized service center) is that using the correct printer driver is ESSENTIAL to getting good output. For example, and you may have to work for this, you may wish to use a PostScript driver instead of a PCL driver. You may wish to use PCL5e instead of PCL6. If you experiment a little I think you will be satisfied with the output.
