Living on the east coast, I've been told that the east coast, in general, has a darker tuba sound concept, and that the west coast has a brighter tuba sound concept. I don't think that I really believe in the east and west coast sounds though. For example, Floyd Cooley has probably the darkest sound I have heard, and he is on the west coast. Warren Deck on the east coast, has a combination of both darkness and brightness. I think the two coastal sound thing got started because in the 60's through the early 80's. The west coasters mainly used Miraphones, and the east coasters mostly used Alexanders. Nowadays, i'ts a mix on both sides.
