You unfortunately only experienced Conn at their worst. During the 70s Conn was owned by MacMillan publishing who mismanaged them horrendously, including closing their Elkhart plant and moving much of that production to Texas. That wouldn't have been so bad, but in the move they lost most of their experienced workers, and therefore instruments were being made by people with little to no experience in doing so.

Conn instruments made before 1970 were good to excellent, and some of their pre-war instruments are among the best ever made. Since the creation of UMI in 1985 Conn quality and innovation seems to be improving. Their latest instruments are very well made and designed.
