I have a pair of "Executive" bifocals for distance and close-up, and a single vision pair focused for 36 inches for reading music. There are three styles of lined bifocals: "Executive" where the line goes all the way across the lens, and two sizes of "D" shaped bifocals. Then there is the blended "no-line" kind, and a "room-distance" no-line that can have two focal distances that are closer together, like reading and 20 feet.
Since musicians can't always adjust their head to see through the right part OR through te "D" of regular bifocals, most do best with executive, with the line placed higher than most people would want. The no-line style had too small of a close-focused area for me, and it wasn't in the right place.
If you really want to get it right the first time, without spending a fortune on trial-and-error, buy frames you like with the plain lenses they come with, then on the gig draw on them with a Sharpie marker where you need to look through at different distances. Make sure the optometrist will work with you on this, so they're right for you. You'll be much happier this way.
Be sure you LIKE the frames you buy (fit and appearance), or you'll hate wearing them.
