Sorry Ken, what I meant to say was to agree with you that th group comes first in most situations, but a student that you have recommended a C4 mouthpiece is going to benefit with a better sound and enjoy playing tuba more. To paraphrase what I was told in the Air Force, the needs of the Band comes first. I think that James should play his Miraphone (especially if it's just a visual thing, left bell vs right) but has to be careful fighting for it, or it could cost people jobs not to mention dissent and bad feelings in the band. If it is sound, I agree that musicianship can make the 186 CC blend with the section of 321s (and like you said, experimenting with some mouthpieces). The sousaphone argument is a weak one and college doesn't have CC souzies.
