I have sinned! and enjoyed it! I was the only tuba player in a loud high school band, and my director wanted just as much volume as I could put out. Being eager to please, I put out more volume than any three people normally could (of should), and tone was not an object (though I was an intonation fanatic).
Let's face it; playing louder that a jet airliner taking off is fun. Unfortunately, it's also egotistical and obnoxious to do it anytime that you're not asked to when playing in an ensemble situation. Ask any ex-blaster who has ever become a teacher himself; anyone who has to conduct another blaster quickly sees the light.
